How I'm preparing for Christmas

In room 1, we have been learning about advent and the real meaning of Christmas. We then made slideshows on how we prepare for Christmas. Here is my one. Do you do anything different to prepare for Christmas?

The gift of free will

For R.E in our class we have been learning about the gift-taonga-of free will. Free will is to be free to do what you want but making the right decision. This is a memo from God to all people that we have created. I hope you enjoy it!

                 A MEMO
FROM:GOD
TO:ALL PEOPLE
FROM:JENNA, HOLLY, HAYLEY AND ELIJAH

Why I gave you free will?:
I gave you free will so that you can make your own choices
and not a puppet on string.

How I wish you to use your free will:
I want you to make wise choices in life and use your initiative
to make the world a great place for yourself as well as others.
What I most want from you:
I want you to be kind towards others and treat them like how you want to be treated.

Global Action summary

                                               Global Action

For Reading we had to read an article called Global Action by Phillip Simpson. This is a summary on the article.

What is this about?

This article gives us information on things that are causing global warming as well as ways that we are trying to stop this or cutdown on resources that are affecting global warming.
Rising temperatures
Earths average temperature has risen by around 1 degree Celsius within the last century, and scientists say if we continue this way of living, it will increase by a further 2-6 degrees by 2100!
Did you know?
Did you know, about half of New Zealand’s emissions came from transport, electricity production, industry, and waste!
What about the other half?
The other half of New Zealand’s emissions come from agriculture. This is due to sheep and cattle releasing methane and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere!
What we can do to fix this.
A type of grass called ryegrass. The extra sugar in this helps microbes use more of the grasses available protein. So if there is less protein that is passed through the animal, then there is less nitrogen being released into the environment!
Thank you for reading my summary, I hope you have learnt something from this.

Kopuwai and the clever girl summary

Kopuwai and the clever girl
Legend retold by Brian Potiki
_________________________________________________________________________________

For reading we had to read a retold Maori legend by Brian Potiki.

This legend is called Kopuwai and the clever girl.

My Summary
This story is about a girl called Kaiamio who wanders off from her party
because of boredom from everyone searching for moas eggs.
She gets caught by Kopuwais two-headed dogs
and dragged to Kopuwai's cave. Kopuwai is a monster with the body of a man,
scales of a fish, and the head of a dog.

He sees Kaiamio and decides to keep her as his Mokai and she can do all his chores. Kaiamo is tied up and wishes to escape, so whenever she had spare time she would work on a boat to help her escape. The monsters weakness is the North-West wind, it makes him sleepy!
One day when Kopuwai was sleeping (because of the wind), Kaiamio escaped with the boat down the river. Kopuwai woke and tugged on the rope that Kaiamio had tied to a weed. As he and his dogs ran to the river, it was too late, she’d managed to escape.
Kopuwai and his two-headed stayed at the river’s edge where years later a huge stone still stands, this is believed to be Kopuwai.

What I thought about the story

I found this story very interesting, as well as the belief that Kopuwai’s body is still here, as stone which is found in Otago.Something I found important is that Kaiamio never gave up and managed to escape.

What I would take in my backpack from the book 'Pax'

`
      PAX: WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE?

If you were to pack a backpack for a long journey such as Peter’s, what would you bring?

In the space below and on the next page, add pictures of the items that you would bring with you
your backpack. At the bottom, write a brief explanation of why you would bring each item with you.

Things I would take in my bag:

*Canned food- This will last longer than non-canned food
*spork-to eat food with
*water in reusable bottles
*food for Pax- a fox in the story

*Knife- for safety out in the forest

*Tent and sleeping bag-these could be attached to the bag
*Matches- to light a fire so you can keep warm and cook food
*Wind and rain proof jacket
*Soap- to wash my hands
*head-torch
*First-Aid Kit

Footsteps Challenge

In Room 1 we are doing The Footsteps Challenge, this involves a range of different tasks to complete by the end of the year. One of the challenges we have had to do so far is to improve our garden.
For this challenge I have planted some winter vegetables such as: lettuce, celery, broad beans and spinach and created a tunnel shelter for the veges out of chicken cage wire and plastic bags.

Here are some photos of our progress so far...

 Me planting the veges.

This is after I have planted everything in my garden.

These are the covers I have made for my plants, (and my adventurous cat checking the tunnels out!)
